Description

Castell y Bere

THIS CASTLE WAS BEGUN BY LLYWELYN THE GREAT SOON AFTER 1221. IT WAS CAPTURED BY THE ENGLISH IN 1283.

1221 ... Llywelyn took from Gruffudd, his son, the cantref of Meirionydd, of which he had gained possession, and the adjoining commote of Ardudwy. And he began to build a castle in it.

Llywelyn ab Iorwerth's castle of Bere, built to secure the borders of his kingdom in the mountains of Meirionydd, typifies the castle building of the princes of north Wales. Perched on a narrow rocky spur in the river valley below Cader Idris and hemmed in closely by mountains, its siting is certainly spectacular.

Low curtain walls enclose the crest of the rock, with large apsidal (`D'-shaped) towers at either end. Entrance to the enclosure is through two simple gate towers, both defended by drawbridge and portcullis. To judge from carved stonework recovered in excavation, (some of which can be seen on display here), the interior of the castle must have been quite richly decorated.

Like Criccieth and Dolwyddelan, Castell y Bere was captured in 1283 by the forces of Edward I and partly refortified, although very little seems to have been done to alter it. The castle was probably abandoned finally after a Welsh assault in 1294.

OUR VISIT

Just when you think you have been to all the local castles we come across this amazing place that is probably now my favourite out of them all, that i have visited anyway.

Arriving at Castell-y-bere was a small free car park, probably only holds around 7 cars, can not see the castle from the road or car park.

We headed towards a gate with sign saying castle, the castle is up but we start going down a path so had to turn around to make sure we was heading in the right direction, we was, carried on walking along this path then started going up hill for 10 min, opening up a bit to some lovely castle ruins, i was shocked at the size and character of the place, views was amazing, all mountains and fields, looked very well maintained, still can not get over the size and i didn't know about this place, from here we headed over to Dolgoch Water Falls that's only a 10 min drive.
