Tomen Castell - Dolwyddelan

The tree-covered natural mound over the road of Dolwyddelan Castle is the site of the first castle built in the valley, Tomen Castell.
Nothing remains of the tower that stood on the mound except the footings of its thick stone walls.
Tomen Castell is thought to be the birthplace of Llywelyn the Great (who lived about 1172 to 1240).
A skilled warrior and diplomat, Llywelyn united most of Wales during his 40 year rule, and even married into the English royal family.
